چکیده

Parents who are not capable of producing high-quality children tend to invest more in daughters. When parents divorce, the investment per offspring inevitably declines. It was predicted that parental divorce would result in development of more manipulative, less altruistic interpersonal attitudes—except for the relationship between daughters and kin. It also was predicted that parental divorce would produce insecurity in adult relationships, lower academic performance, and increased sexuality. Students ( N 5 139) provided family demographics and personal information including American College Test score and grade-point average (GPA). They completed questionnaires measuring adult security of attachment, helping attitudes, Machiavellianism, and sexual restrictedness (sociosexuality [SOI]). Children of divorce had increased SOI scores, were less helpful, and had lower GPAs. Women whose parents had divorced were more Machiavellian towards people in general but not towards relatives, as predicted. Parental divorce was associated with reduced probability of being securely attached for women but not for men. Results indicate the need for more precise theory making different predictions for men and women. © 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.

The F N method is used to compute the classical X and 1⁄2 functions for use in the solution of a class of non-grey radiative-transfer problems defined for finite layers. The model considered allows for scattering with complete frequency redistribution (completely noncoherent scattering) and continuum absorption. Some test problems based on Doppler and Lorentz profiles of the line-scattering coe...

Is military incompetence adaptive? An empirical test with risk-taking behaviour in modern warfare

In battles, opponents exhibit positive illusions in both believing they can win. With great costs of failure and uncertain success, this represents extreme risk-taking behaviour. Conflict may be expected if one side is cornered, a sacrificial pawn in an overall war strategy, or demanded into action by politicians. However, in many cases even patently weaker forces fight despite nonviolent optio...

Reciprocal altruism in humans may be made possible in part by the existence of information processing mechanisms for the detection of overt cheating. However, cheating may not always be readily detectable due to the division of labor. Subtle cheating poses a serious problem for the evolution of altruism. This article argues that subtle cheating may have exerted selective pressures on early homi...

Costly signaling theory (CST) offers an explanation of generosity and collective action that contrasts sharply with explanations based on conditional reciprocity. This makes it particularly relevant to situations involving widespread unconditional provisioning of collective goods. We provide a preliminary application of CST to ethnographic data on turtle hunting and public feasting among the Me...

Based on Silverman and Eals’ hunter-gatherer theory of the origin of sex-specific spatial attributes, the present research sought to identify the evolved mechanisms involved in hunting that contribute to the dimorphism. The focus of these studies was the relationship between three-dimensional mental rotations, the spatial test showing the largest and most reliable sex difference favoring males,...
